Artpark presents JP Jofre Hard Tango Chamber Band and Alarm Will Sound

from Emily MT

Artpark announces a performance by JP Jofre Hard Tango Chamber Band and Alarm Will Sound as part of the 2021 New Music in the Park series on August 7, 2021 at 7pm in the Artpark Amphitheater. Tickets for the event are $25 and are available at artpark.net/events/jp-jofre-hard-tango-chamber-band. The performance is sponsored by HSBC Bank.

JP Jofre is known as one of the world's foremost soloists on the bandoneon: the soulful, Argentinian instrument that it is the main voice of tango and that Astor Piazzolla catapulted to fame. But Jofre is also a brilliant and pioneering composer whose work transcends nuevo tango to encompass the neo-romantic, indie classical and jazz. JP Jofre and the Hard Tango Chamber Band includes: Ron Wasserman (double bass); Eric Silberger (violin); Amy Kang (cello); Pablo Cafici (piano).

Program:
Hard Tango (JP Jofre)
Milongon (JP Jofre)
After the Rain (JP Jofre)
La Camorra 3 (Astor Piazzolla)
Taranguino (JP Jofre)
Manifiesto (JP Jofre)
Libertango (Astor Piazzolla)
Universe (JP Jofre)

A preview performance of "Manifesto" by JP Jofre is available to view at youtube.com/watch?v=-CiJ_YElyew&ab_channel=JPJOFRE.

The twenty-piece Alarm Will Sound once again brings their engaging, otherworldly sounds to Artpark, playing music with an irreverent charm and daring seldom heard in stodgy halls. This time, their performance will include a previous collaborative work with Queens, NY-based artist Eartheater, who distills foley-filled digital production and classical composition into works suspended between reckless romanticism and detailed sonic tapestries. When Fire is Allowed to Finish, her work with Alarm Will Sound, contains six emotionally charged movements. The music is fearlessly expressive, lush, and emotional — bound to jolt even the most jaded listener.

The music is fearlessly expressive, lush, and emotional, and while harkening back to Romanticism with a capital 'R' simultaneously stays rooted in the contemporary by incorporating unusual and unexpected timbres and rhythmic devices. For this project, composers Aaron Parker, Steve Snowden, and Conrad Winslow were enlisted to orchestrate Drewchin's musical ideas. This work has a duration of 30 minutes and was premiered in May of 2018. This piece is being recorded now and will be released on the label Cognitive Shift possibly later in the fall.

Alarm Will Sound's setlist:
Eartheater, When Fire is Allowed to Finish
Jlin arr. Kim and Thompson, Black Origami
King Britt and Marcos Balter, Atomic Theory III: "Electron Orbitals"
Aphex Twin arr. Stefan Freund, T69 Collapse

About the Artists
The JP Jofre Hard Tango Chamber Band is based in New York City and was started in 2008 by bandoneonist and composer Juan Pablo (J.P.) Jofre. The quintet focuses on Jofre's original works as well as authentic interpretations of legendary composer Astor Piazzolla. After its debut performance at the Public Theatre in NYC in 2008, the group has appeared at Great Performers at Lincoln Center (who touted the Argentinian expatriate as "one of today's leading tango artists"), Celebrities Series of Boston, and Seattle Town Hall, among many others. Along with Jofre, the band comprises violinist Eric Silberger, cellist Amy Kang, double bassist Ron Wasserman, and pianist Pablo Cafici. Guest pianist Siyi Fang and guest bassist Chris Johnson frequent the quintet as well.

Alarm Will Sound's repertoire ranges from the arch-modernist to the pop-influenced, frequently incorporating video, text, theater, and movement into their productions to inspire new questions from listeners and to "encourage the search for new answers." Since their earliest days playing together at the Eastman School of Music, they have collaborated with composers, designers, writers, choreographers, videographers — a wide range of compelling experimental artists — in pursuit of undiscovered artistic territory.

Alexandra Drewchin, aka Eartheater, is a prolific multi-instrumentalist, composer, singer, poet, choreographer, and visual/performance artist. Born in North East Pennsylvania, she is currently based in Queens, NY. Her music has been released on Hausu Mountain and PAN.

ARTPARK is a park and a cultural institution located in Lewiston, NY along the Niagara Gorge, USA. Established in 1974, Artpark is a collaboration between the New York State Parks and the cultural nonprofit institution Artpark & Company. The picturesque 150 acre performing and visual arts park is located along the historic Niagara River Gorge on land rich in Native American, pioneer and early American history. Approximately 12,000 years ago the majestic Niagara Falls began to work its way upriver from this site to its current location. Artpark's Mainstage theater opened in July of 1974 on land that was once the Lower Landing of the nine mile Niagara Portage that skirted the unnavigable Gorge and Falls. Designated as a National Historic Landmark (in 1998), Artpark includes several archeological sites, including a Hopewell Mound from one of the earliest Native American mound building cultures and the remnants of the much more recent Oak Hill Mansion. Artpark is a National Wildlife Federation Backyard Wildlife Habitat, & National Audubon Society birding site (along the Niagara River Corridor), Artpark is also a popular destination for hiking, picnics, and fishing. As a cultural institution, Artpark attracts over 150,000 audiences over the course of its' summer season (June-August) and serves a population of approximately 1.2 million Western New Yorkers and over 1 million Canadian residents. Over the course of it 40-year history, over 2.5 million persons have attended musical and theater performances at Artpark. In addition to being widely regarded as one of the top rock music Amphitheater stages, under the artistic leadership of President Sonia Kozlova Clark, Artpark has presented a increasingly diverse program including major North American premiers by companies like the Plasticiens Volants (France) with their unique giant inflatable puppetry; the Brazilian modern dance sensation Bale de Rua mixing the traditions of capoeira and B-boy; music acts varying from Boy George to George Clinton and Thievery Corporation; the Native-American DJ duo A Tribe Called Red and Ukranian folk-punk band DakhaBrakha. A new Strawberry Moon Festival has been established in 2019 to celebrate the global influence of the indigenous arts. In 2016 Artpark has developed a unique Artpark Percussion Garden, a new place for sound and nature explorations with interactive installations created by collaboration of visual artists and musicians. Same year we launched a long-term initiative Artpark Laboratory under curatorship of Mary Miss and her City as Living Laboratory, focusing on the exploration of intersections of art, nature, science and technologies and creating awareness on the global climate change crisis. For more information, visit artpark.net.
