University of Southern Maine Wind Ensemble

from Lori Arsenault

In the final concert of the season for USM Bands, the Wind Ensemble presents chamber works featuring some of our most talented musicians. The program also welcomes many guests; two Master of Music conducting students take the podium, Allison Chipman and Ben David Richmond.

Richmond serves as composer and conductor on one of his own pieces for chamber winds and computer electronics. Dan Welcher’s work The Need to See tells a timely story of a child-like experience at the US-Mexican border between Isabella (living on the Texas side of the border), and Tomas (on the Mexican side). The fairy tale is brought to life by senior vocal performance major Rachel Shukan; her intricate story telling mixed with her beautiful voice brings the folksongs to life.

The second half of the program features many of our USM faculty on Parade in movements from William Walton’s Façade. A collaboration of Walton’s composition and the late Edith Sitwell’s poetry, these proclamatory nonsense poems feature our faculty members through intricate rhythms and characters. What better way to close a concert than with British satire and Sir Beelzebub?
