Is theater a welcoming environment for women producers? Has that changed over the years? Do women producers offer a different esthetic from their male counterparts? Studies indicate that women tend to be more collaborative, intuitive and empathetic in their management style. Though perhaps a generalization, do women producers display a different management style? There is controversy about the disproportionate number of works by men produced both historically and in the present. Might more women producers mean more works by women, and more stories that center on women? Is commercial theater or not-for-profit more welcoming for women? And given all these questions, what might theater look like with more women producers taking the lead?

Presented in association with Women in the Arts & Media Coalition (WAMC). Speakers will include Sue Frost, founding partner at Junkyard Dog Productions (TONY Award-winning Memphis, First Date); Kristin Marting,executive director of HERE Arts Center; Lorca Peress, artistic director of MultiStages; Cheryl Wiesenfeld, four-time Tony Award-winning producer (Vanya & Sonia & Masha & Spike, All the Way, Porgy & Bess, Elaine Stritch: At Liberty; plus A Steady Rain, Play Dead, The Exonerated, In the Continuum); and others to be announced soon. Moderated by TRU Vice President and Co-Founder Cheryl Davis.

The Playroom Theater is a small theater with a purpose on West Forty Sixth Street. Created by longtime theatrical producer Eric Krebs, The Playroom Theater features a 62-seat boutique theater, appropriate for rehearsals, readings, auditions, producers' presentations and workshop productions. Conceived of as an artists' workspace for writers, directors, composers, actors, producers and others committed to the professional theater arts and its industry. "The idea of The Playroom has grown out of my desire to create a small and financially manageable space in the heart of the theater district," commented Krebs. "I want this to be a place where industry professionals can pop over for a reading, a backer's audition or a small production of a work in progress." Theater Resources Unlimited (TRU) is the leading network for developing theater professionals, a twenty-five year old 501c3 nonprofit organization created to help producers produce, emerging theater companies to emerge healthily and all theater professionals to understand and navigate the business of the arts. Membership includes self-producing artists as well as career producers and theater companies.
