Festival of South African Dance

from State Theatre

The Festival of South African Dance, tells a tale of rural African men in search of greener pastures. They come by train to the city of gold, Johannesburg. This unique story is shared through song and dance performed by two companies, The Gumboots Dance Company under the direction of Thapelo Gordon Motluong and the Pantsula Dance Company under the direction of Sello Rueben Modiga.

The Pantsula Dance Company will perform the program, REAL ACTIONS PANTSULA. This dance was created to speak on the socio-economic conditions of present day South Africa through pantsula, a culturally enriching South African Dance form. The company consists of men from the city of Orange Farm, South Africa.

Motluong and the Gumboots Dance Company perform a program that speaks on a variety of issues with a common theme of preserving and restoring the traditions of South Africa. The program features Gumboot dance, a dance form derived from the miners of South Africa under the racial oppression of apartheid. Motluong is also known as the author and director of the internationally acclaimed theater production, Spirit and Bones. (from )
